To compete with BMW's X6 luxury crossover which was launched in 2008, Mercedes Benz has announced to launch a new crossover which will most likely be titled, the GLS Class. Currently, BMW X6 is fighting a lone battle in the segment as there are hardly any serious competitors.
Earlier this week, Mercedes Benz released a press release announcing the birth of their new car. Mercedes Benz will be investing $350 million at their plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and will also create job opportunities for 400 people.
In India, BMW X6 is available in two variants, X6 xDrive30d (diesel) generating 241 bhp and X6 xDrive50i (petrol) generating 407 bhp and has a price of Rs 68.7 lacs and Rs 85.5 lacs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). Though it is too early to predict the technical specifications and pricing of Mercedes Benz GLS crossover, but expect these details to be close to BMW X6 figures.

The electric version of the gasoline car T.25. is powered with electric engine from company Zytek Automotive. Conveyer production is expected in 2013.
The first 100 people to buy an toyota electric vehicle in Glendale will get a $200 rebate from the city if they install a special socket that will help measure the impact of cars tapping into the power grid.
City officials say they want to be prepared for the influx of energy use as the electric vehicles become more popular, the Glendale News-Press reported.
The special socket will measure the effect on the power supply, said Ned Bassin, assistant general manager of customer and support services at Glendale Water & Power.
"We expect in the future there will be a lot of electric vehicles," Bassin said.
Without proper planning, that could take a toll on the city's energy system, officials say.
"It's like adding a whole home to our distribution system," Bassin said.
Electric-car buyers that want to charge their car faster must hire an electrician to install a 240-volt socket, for which the city will be installing special meters to measure the energy use.
But the meters need a special connection that the electrician will be required to install -- typically at a cost of $200 -- hence the rebate offer.
